Red Hook

From a thriving port to a spirited pocket of creativity.

Red Hook, named after its red earth and land shape, was settled by Europeans in the 1600s. It evolved from Dutch mills to a bustling port by the mid-19th century. This prosperity waned in the 1960s due to shipping changes. Now, a revival led by creative individuals cherishing its isolation has transformed it into a renaissance hub resembling a close-knit small town, where passion projects thrive.

Text showing commute times, nearest subways, and boundaries with nearby neighborhoods. Commute times list Atlantic Terminal, Grand Central, Union Square, and Wall Street by train and car. Nearest subways include G and F lines. Boundaries are described as Gowanus Canal to Buttermilk Channel and Gowanus Expressway to Upper New York Bay, with neighborhoods Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Columbia St. Waterfront District mentioned.
